In the USA, bacterial species that should not be used in dietary supplements include Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Conversely, Enterococcus spp is accepted for use in animal feed by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) as a direct fed microorganism, provided the microorganism is non-toxigenic. In China, CFDA does not approve this strain to be freely used in human foods, however there are some approved OTC drugs which contain Enterococcus faecium; this strain is mainly approved for animal health or animal feed applications.
