Bifidobacterium breve colonizes the large intestine and is a producer of lactic and acetic acids that inhibit the growth of undesirable bacteria. It enhances immune responses against various pathogenic antigens and has been shown to repress the growth of ulcerinducingbacteria. Recent
studies have demonstrated that Bifidobacterium breve can   colonize the immature bowel of infants very effectively and is associated with betterweight gain in very low birth weight infants.

Bifidobacterium breve(B.breve), is in the Bifidobacterium family, it is a Gram-positive bacteria that is non-motile,anaerobic, and non-spore forming. B.breve is a common and sometimes very abundant inhabitant of the human gut (include the infant's gut), it canalso be isolated in other environments, including human milk, the adult gut, and human vagina. The optimized cultivation temperature for B.breve is below 37ºC. What the metabolic mechanism for B.breve is can be heteromorphosis to ferment glucose, galactose, fructose etc to produce Lactic Acid, Acetic Acid, also to produce Enzymes, Vitamins etc.The presence of Bifidobacterium spp in the human gut has been correlated with particular health-promoting effects,  such as enforcement of the intestinal barrier,activation/modulation of the host's immune response and protection against particular infections and for this reason representatives of this genus have been included as active ingredients in functional foods.
