Flora-Focus® Probiotic Powder
Bacillus megatherium BM-GA53
Offering exclusive probiotic powders for professional clients around the world .
BM-GA53 powder is a probiotic additive, containing Bacillus megatherium BM-GA53 and adilutioncarrier (such as glucoseanhydrousetc).
Bacillus megatherium BM-GA53 is a bacteria with the belowcharacter:
Kingdom: Bacteria
Phylum: Firmicutes
Class: Bacilli
Order: Bacillales
Family: Bacillaceae
Genus: Bacillus
Species: B. megaterium
Gram-positive, Rod-shaped bacteria, with a spore form and a cell length of up to 4 µm and a diameter of 1.5 µm, The cells often occur in pairs and chains, where the cells are joined together by polysaccharides on the cell walls, metabolism prefer mesophilic temperature and aerobic condition. B. megaterium grows at temperatures from 3 °C to 45 °C, with the optimum around 30 °C. It is also an endophyte, nitrogen fixation and a potential agent for the biocontrol of plant diseases.
B. megaterium is ubiquitous in the environment and has been an important industrial organism for decades, from the summarized study results, the metabolism of the Bacillus megatherium has the following characteristics:
1) Oxygen consumption by aerobic metabolism to help support the other anaerobic bacteria, especially the friendly lactic acid bacteria to grow up, the further metabolism from the lactic acid bacteria can also produce more organic acid to compete and inhibit the pathogens growing up.
2)Vitamins and anti-bodies production ability. It produces penicillin amidase used to make synthetic penicillin, various amylases used in the baking industry and glucose dehydrogenase used in glucose blood tests. Further, it is used for the production of pyruvate, vitamin B12, drugs with fungicidal and antiviral properties, etc. It produces enzymes for modifying corticosteroids, as well as several amino acid dehydrogenases.
3) It can produce poly-γ-glutamic acid. The accumulation of the polymer is greatly increased in a saline (2-10% NaCl) environment, in which the polymer comprises largely of L-glutamate (Lisomercontent up to 95%). At least one strain of B. megaterium can be considered a halophile, as growth on up to 15% NaCl has been observed.

SAFETY CONCERNS:
The application of Bacillus spp is still in the documenting phase; The main concerns are with:
(1) Antibiotic and antibiotic resistance.
Unlike the other friendly bacteria, the DNA analysis studies showed that there is some risks for the mobile plasmids from the Bacillus spp to transfer the antibiotic resistance to other microbes, especially the Coccus spp and Coliforms.
(2) Bacillus spp is not easy to be sterilized.
Although Bacillus can be widely found in the environment not all the Bacillus spp has the probiotic character.
The production control for the Bacillus spp must be very cautious to avoid the cross-contamination.
(3) Due to some special enzyme and antibody production abilities, some Bacillus spp might be used as a genetically engineered bacteria; if used as probiotic it is essential to demonstrate its non-GMO status.
(4) Since Bacillus megaterium is considered non- pathogenic, some study reports that Bacillus megaterium produces Heat-stable toxin, but whether this is due to its natural antibiotic character or other mechanism still needs further research, the most suitable way when you take this microbe should consulate with the health practitioner.
While in the global market, there is a trend to introduce Bacillus spp into the dietary supplements or healthcare application, Bacillus spp has been granted QPS (Qualified Presumption of Safety) status by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) for certain applications. In China,CFDA doesnot approve this strain to be freely used in human foods, but some of the OTC drugs approved are with Bacillus licheniformis. In China, this strain is mainly approved.
